There is a range of practices that aim to keep disease out of your property. This checklist summarises the actions you can take to protect your pigs and to minimise the spread of more common diseases.<\/p>\n
Assess your property against each section to ensure your checklist is adequate.<\/p>\n
Healthy pigs<\/strong><\/p>\n Healthy pigs are intelligent, social, alert animals. They forage in the ground for food, and eat and sleep frequently throughout the day.<\/p>\n The normal Heart rate is\u00a070\u2013120 beats per minute,\u00a0Breathing rate is 10\u201320 breaths per minute and\u00a0 the normal temperature is\u00a038.5-39.5\u00b0C<\/p>\n Sick pigs may\u00a0lose their appetite, separate from other pigs,\u00a0become listless,\u00a0have a swollen navel, udder or joints,\u00a0have rapid or irregular breathing, sneeze. Sick pigs will also\u00a0persistently cough or pant,\u00a0shiver,\u00a0have discoloured or blistered skin,\u00a0lose body condition, may\u00a0become lame and\u00a0lose co-ordination.<\/p>\n Managing pig health<\/strong><\/p>\n To ensure Pig health, Inspect your pigs at least once a day.<\/p>\n Separate sick pigs from healthy animals.<\/p>\n Always consult a vet about any unusual illness or unexpected deaths.<\/p>\n Vaccinate for common diseases.<\/p>\n Keep a record of veterinary treatments.<\/p>\n Provide access to weatherproof shelter.<\/p>\n If kept in paddocks, rotate your pigs onto fresh pasture (before 60% grazed).<\/p>\n Regularly clean pig pens and\/or remove manure from paddocks.<\/p>\n Train staff to follow biosecurity practices for disease prevention and identification.<\/p>\n Moving pigs onto\/off your property<\/strong><\/p>\n Check the health of your pigs before transporting them off the property.<\/p>\n Keep records of pig movements onto and off your property<\/p>\n Identify your pigs with an pig ear tag (any size pigs) or your pig brand tattoo (pigs over 25kg).<\/p>\n If you bred the pig, use a yellow tag in their left ear, or tattoo their left shoulder.<\/p>\n If you did not breed the pig, use an orange tag in the pig\u2019s right ear or tattoo their right shoulder.<\/p>\n Clean and disinfect vehicles\/equipment before leaving\/returning to your property.<\/p>\n Clean all clothing before leaving and returning to the property.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" There is a range of practices that aim to keep disease out of your property.
