Some local agencies have figures for the AUM for lands in there areas, I suggest basing your heard off their suggestions and then watching your land and how it is when moving cattle to next pasture. You may have lots of grass left which could be nice if the following year is dry or you may be over grazing and need to reduce heard to benefit…Read more

Kalungi Charles replied to the topic Bottle calf won't eat. What should I do? in the forum Breeding and Calving 5 years, 8 months ago
If they are 2 weeks old a bottle twice a day is WAY to much!
That in itself will scour them up and make them lethargic.
Think the best all you can eat buffet twice a day.
Cut them back to 1/4 bottle 3 times a day for best results/growth. If you don’t have the ability to feed 3x a day then 1/2 bottle max 2x daily.
A happy healthy calf is the…Read more -

First off how old are they?
What scour pill did you give them?
Are they still scoured up?
Do either have a fever?

I was in a debate with myself about the very same idea last year and I decided to get into the beef industry by buying bred cows. Its worked out well for me so far and I have a pretty minimal investment into the industry, didn’t pay anymore than 1.375 a pound and got a couple as low as 1.05 a pound.

I used vet gun this year. My black cows have the biggest problem with horn flies. I put out Purina Wind and Rain mineral with fly treatment. And used fly gun on cattle with heavier infestation. Vet gun works as advertised. Stand behind your truck when feeding so your targets don’t see what you are up to. Hit them once on shoulders and once on the…Read more

Brown Swiss is going to be your best milker between the two and they have a really mellow teprement. They will give about 65lbs a day. They are the size of a holstein and the colors of a jersey. There milk is really good for cheese and cream to. Basically they are just big overgrown pets.
Jersey will give 48-50lbs a day but they get upset really…Read more -

What are you looking for? Are you looking for longevity or a good milker? What kind of facility do you have. Is there someone around there that will pay a premium for higher quality milk? What do you have for land? What are your feed costs? Sorry for all the questions but it helps to make the best choice.
